Bluetooth Blues

I had reason to put a bluetooth dongle on my computer with the requisite driver for it.  I had never messed with anything regarding bluetooth before.  After the driver installed I had a new network connection in the toolbar but it had a red X through it and an error stating that “A network cable is unplugged”.  I was dismayed and figured I had to go figure out what to fix or the bluetooth dongle was not going to work with the PDAs and phones I’d wanted it to work with.

I was wrong.  This is the normal result of an installation of this driver.  The network connection in the toolbar is not necessary to communicate with the portable devices I wanted to communicate with.  It’s apparently only necessary if there is another PC using bluetooth you want to network with.  There is no need to go fix anything and actually no need for the network connection to be created.  But this is not an option the installation software gives you; it creates the network connection without asking you.  So naturally when it gets created and reports an error, any normal person would think something is wrong.

What a pain.  Especially after I spent about two hours scrounging around in help files and web searches before I stumbled across this.  The manufacturor of the device is Belkin, and they get zero kudos from me for their installation process.  It reeks.
