Majors Practice Game

Our little leaguers had a practice game tonight and it went pretty well.  They won handily 11-0 in five but more importantly (since it was a practice game) I saw a few good fundamentals out there.  They have room for improvement no doubt, but some of the things they did right.  Relay men, cut offs, backups, defensive calls, steals, bunts (two beauties in fact).  The only real mistake I saw all night was a failure to tag up at third on one play, and I think the coach just misread the ball on that one - hard to fault.  But that’s why we practice.  It was a good experience for them and did them more good than another regular practice.

They need to hit and hit and hit, because they are going to see MUCH better pitching than they saw today.

They need to continue some fundamental skills because talking about them only gets you so far.  Repeat them enough that the positions involved are confident in what’s being called and fearless in executing it, and they’ll be in good shape.

Good enough to get where we want to go?  I don’t know.  That’s going to take some doing.  But this is a good team.  A better team than some others I’ve been around that might have had a few better players, but who could not become a team.

  1. The Majors played a second practice game last Thursday, and although neither team was really into it much, our team did pull out a “win”. I think they won by a run in six complete, with the bases loaded and tying run on third. It was, again, better than a routine practice and some other kids got some reps in places they didn’t get reps the first practice game. All in all, a good experience.
