Idalou Game

The seventh grade A team got to play a full game finally and thoroughly manhandled the Wildcats to the tune of 28-6.  Only a late trick play by Idalou allowed them to score their lone TD with less than 10 seconds on the game clock.

The boys kicked off and played the same solid D they played that first quarter against Levelland.  We soon had the ball and behind the tough running of JB we scored our first TD and extra point.  It wasn’t long before we were right down there again and up 16-0.

In the second quarter Shane picked off an Idalou pass at midfield and we drove down the field in shorter chunks as the Idalou D began to key off JB, but we still took it down the field.  This time it was Shane to pick up the TD on a dive into the left side of the line.  I’d seen the coaches working with some linemen on this play before our game and it worked.  The left guard and left tackle opened up the hole just enough to get us the yardage we needed.  We went to halftime up 22-0 as the extra point failed.

After halftime we finally got to return a kickoff.  Both teams traded some possesions but no scoring occured in the third.  In the fourth we had worked our way down field but we were stopped short of the goal, but in just a few plays Shane had his second pick of the night, almost taking it back to the house but coming up a little short.  A few plays later and it was the center of the line, led by Hayden, who surged ahead and got Jace in the endzone on a sneak right up the middle for our fourth TD.  Again the PAT failed, but we were in control.

Our D continued to play well, but a halfback pass succeeded in getting the ‘Cats down inside the 10 and they threw a TD pass in the flat to their back with about 6 seconds left.  The Mustangs denied them the extra point, handled the kickoff and took one kneel down to end it, 28-6.

There were several good looking plays and tackles on defense.  I recall, on different plays, JB and Rocky and Lupe and Jared knifing through for very good solo tackles.  Koby played solid D on his end and stopped several sweeps for zero or lost yardage.  Carson Ogle made a very nice open field tackle.  The pass rush contributed to the two picks Shane got because the QB was having to throw out of a well.

Offensively we continue to look good.  JB is just too much for most defenses to handle, but we continue to work most phases of our offense into the mix.  O-line is doing well and when they and the blocking backs learn to hold their blocks longer we’ll be even better.  Jace had several nice touch passes to the back out in the flat, and it looks like we’ll be in good shape when we decide to incorporate some downfield passing.

It’s looking good so far.  Next week our long awaited home opener!

  1. My dad went with me to this game, and about mid-way through the second quarter after JB had manhandled a few more would-be tacklers, Dad turned to me and said, “That’s just not hardly fair.”.

No it’s not. JB is an exceptional 7th grade athlete and the typical 7th grade defender is going to have some trouble bringing him down.
