Fillies All-State Softball
Two of our Fillies were recently recognized by the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State softball team.
Charlsi Brawley is the 1st team all-state catcher, and Lizzie Elston is 3rd team all-state outfield.
Way to go!
Fillies End Grand Season
Our Fillies were eliminated from the softball playoffs tonight but not before giving a valiant effort in a 7-4 loss to Alpine. These young ladies stormed into the regional quarterfinals after battling in one of the toughest districts around.
WE ARE PROUD OF OUR FILLIES!
Fillies Dominate Childress!!!
10-0 Fillie win in the one game area playoff! WOW! GREAT job Fillies, area champs!
Fillies next meet Alpine in the regional quarterfinals.
Fillies Defeat Sonora
Our Fillies defeated Sonora 2-1 in a three game series Monday and Tuesday to advance to the Area round of the UIL playoffs.
They are scheduled to have a one game playoff with Childress in Abilene this Friday.
Good luck Fillies!
UIL Flipped, Now Flops
Beaurocrats. God love ‘em.
The UIL has now decided to alter it’s delayed baseball playoff schedule and begin them a week earlier on the weekend of 5/16.
Mustang fans heads up, that means our first playoff game is 5/19. It’s still a one game playoff but it’s now the only one in the entire set that MUST be so.
Fillie fans, our first series is now 5/11 & 5/12 (next Monday and Tuesday) in Odessa!
See the Mustang Baseball page for practice baseball game info.
Swine Flu & MAJOR Shakeup in UIL Playoffs
The Swine flu outbreak has just had a pretty dramatic effect on all UIL competitions.
There will be NO UIL playoff activity of any kind between schools until May 11. Of specific interest to the Mustangs, the baseball playoffs are now (IMHO) a shambles. Rather than shift everything, they compressed it big time with half the playoff matchups now REQUIRED to be a single game. The region 1 playoff bracket is now adjusted with these new deadlines.

Fillies Defeat Ranked Team
The Fillies softball team defeated state ranked Post Tuesday 6-2. Way to go girls! Post was ranked #23. Remember the Fillies took top ten ranked Slaton pretty much down to the wire recently. I guess they are in a tough, tough district with Slaton, Denver City and Post. I could see the #2 or #3 team from this district doing some damage in the playoffs. Here’s hoping our Fillies make the dance!
Battling a Top 10 Team
Our Fillies softball team started district play Saturday with a matchup against Slaton. I’d read enough on Terry’s Sports Page to know that Slaton was pretty good. I mean they have been flat out wearing some teams out!
I found out Saturday Slaton is ranked in the top 10 in the state. Wow.
And our Fillies were within a 4-3 score going into the 7th. Slaton plated two in the top of the 7th but we came back to get 1 of our own in our half. It was a good softball game. We came up on the short end of a 6-4 score, but our girls played a top ranked team toe to toe. This should tell those girls they can flat out play. It’s only the first district game, so it’s very encouraging to see them perform at this level.
Way to go girls!
Next game is Tuesday 3/24 at Idalou at 5pm.
Girls Regional Finals
Our Fillies dispatched the Wall Hawks this evening 66-48 in the regional semis, which is quite a nice score when you consider that coming into this game Wall was ranked #5 and Shallowater #6. I remained convinced that ranking high school teams anywhere, but especially in Texas, is a fools game.
Their reward? A matchup in the regional finals with Bowie. A smallish AA school, the Bowie starting lineup consists of
- 6′ 0″
- 6′ 0″
- 6′ 0″
- 5′ 11″
- 5′ 10″
On the bench they do have a girl 5′ 5″. She sits with the other 8 subs none of which is less than 5′ 8″.
I’m not kidding. This is what I’ve been told.
What do they do, put these girls on the rack as kids?
It will be a challenge for sure. Bowie is ranked #2 if you go for such things (see above). Our Fillies are peaking at a good time…maybe they can pull this off and return to the state tournament!
A Double-Dip for Our Fillies
The Fillies went to Abernathy Tuesday night and lost a heartbreaker to the Lady Lopes.
Then they took a second dose of bad news when they lost the ensuing coin flip for 1st in the district and will now play as the 2nd place team. Their first game is Monday night in Lamesa at the middle school. Tip at 6:30.
It’s tough sledding to go into the night the #3 ranked team in the state, and come out of it headed to the playoffs as the second best team in your district. But Abernathy was ranked #10. This is one tough district. And besides, once the playoffs start, nobody will pay much attention to who was 1 or 2 from a district. The future looks bright for our Fillies – here’s wishing them the very best of luck!
